Its molecular formula is C7H8O, with a molecular weight of 108.14. It is a mixture of three isomers: ortho-cresol, meta-cresol, and para-cresol. Tri-cresol is a colorless to yellow-brown liquid with a phenolic odor. It is slightly soluble in water but miscible with ethanol, diethyl ether, benzene, chloroform, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and other solvents. It is primarily used in organic synthesis as a raw material for the production of surfactants, lubricating oils, additives for synthetic materials, dye intermediates, disinfectants, plasticizers, pesticides, and flotation reagents for mineral processing.
